American Building and Loan was chartered in Helena in 1922 as a State Building and Loan Association with an emphasis on savings and home loans. We were founded as a mutually owned association (owned by our customers).
American Federal operates today under a
stock federal savings bank charter. In 1991 our name was changed to American Federal Savings Bank. In addition to the standard savings and loan products that American Federal was built upon, we offer a full array of
deposit products and services, as well as a full service
Loan Department.
There are three full-service American Federal offices - the main
office in Helena, which moved into a new building on Prospect Avenue
in February 1997. There is a branch in
Butte,
which opened in 1979 and one in
Bozeman,
which began operating in 1980. The
Townsend
branch, which opened in 1979, offers full depositor services and
also accepts applications for lending services. A branch facility
is also located in Helena on
Neill
Avenue (1987).
